Globalization and Technology have brought a lot of opportunities. The playing field has been leveled. The result? No longer do you just compete with your local market; you compete with the world. This is important to understand because the power of content marketing can make a huge difference in your business…and your success. Who you are online, your branding and your expertise will be exactly what you need to hone in on to set yourself apart.
Does Content Marketing Set the Experts Apart?
What are you an expert at? And, more importantly, are you highlighting your expertise online so that you can work less and make more money?
Most of us are aware that there is a shift in the world of internet marketing. The trend is going toward content that adds value and content that will inspire website surfers to hand over their email address to you in order to join your community. The trend is to harness the power of whatever your area of expertise is, create a list, build a community, provide top shelf content, products and information, and have a worldwide audience that is interested in what you have to say.
If you continue to swim in the massive pool of internet marketing, trying to outwit the next Google move with the latest tactic, then you will spend more time on “chasing” activities and less time on “making” activities.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not preaching here…I’m just as guilty as you are of learning all the latest moves. However, that’s what you do when you first enter the field and ride along with your training wheels. But then, you get a handle on what’s going on and figure out where you need to be. That’s where the training wheels come off and content marketing strategies come in.
Bottom line: You must be an expert in order to compete – period.
Why Do Experts Make More Money? What Do They Know That We Don’t?
Everything that you learn as you go through all the training associated with internet marketing is great. You are learning how things operate on the internet. You learn how to market on the internet. Now, imagine how well you are positioned to market your expertise. To take whatever it is you know, what you are passionate about, what people always come to you for answers about, and create something – a product – to highlight that area of expertise.
Those in the top 10% of their field, the top earners, are experts. Think about that for a minute.
- Donald Trump = Real Estate
- Robert Kiyosaki = Best Selling Money Books
- Tony Robbins = Motivational Speaker
- Oprah Winfrey = Talk Show Host
And, the list goes on.
Are these people capable of doing more than what they are known for? Yes, probably quite a lot; however, they make the majority of their money with their area of expertise.
And, guess what? If any one of these people gave you a proposal for their services, would you argue with them over how much they charged? For a speech, for coaching, for consultation, for training, for any product that they offered.
For the folks at the top, fee is rarely a factor. When your clients are comparing you over your competition based on fees alone then guess what? You are a commodity. And as a commodity you will have a hard time breaking out of a certain level of income for that product or service.
Now, this is not to suggest you be cocky. There will be times and circumstances that you may want to sweeten the pot in order to stay competitive. And, you must always over-deliver to keep not only your expert status but your reputation for integrity and great results.
You cannot rest on your laurels. And, if you are a true professional, expert, and are passionate about what you do then you wouldn’t want to do that anyhow, right?

So why do experts work less but make more money? They are not a commodity. They are focused on their core area of expertise and then use smart content marketing strategies to market the hell out of it putting themselves in front of the right customers, with the right message and products, at just the right time.
